Almost-a-Dog Mountain
Nature
Almost-a-Dog Mountain is an 8,922-foot peak in Glacier National Park's Lewis Range in Montana. Its name honors the Blackfoot warrior Almost A Dog, also known as Imazí-imita, whose life was marked by extraordinary survival. He lived through the 1870 Marias Massacre, in which his entire family was killed, and though the attack left him crippled for life, he endured. He also survived the Winter of Starvation in 1883–84. The mountain's name is therefore closely bound to a deeply personal history of loss, endurance, and survival.
