Red Eagle Glacier
Nature
Red Eagle Glacier is a small glacier remnant in Glacier National Park, hanging on the north slope of Clyde Peak in Montana. Once larger, it has shrunk dramatically over the past century. Photographs from 1914 and 2009 show major retreat, and from 1966 to 2005 it lost 53 percent of its surface area. Now covering less than 25 acres, or about 0.10 square kilometers, it falls below the threshold for classification as an active glacier. Its diminished state reflects the wider loss of named ice bodies in the park and stands as a clear sign of environmental change there.
