Mt. Pisgah State Park in Bradford County, Pennsylvania, occupies 1,302 acres at the base of Mt. Pisgah near Troy and Towanda. Its land was not permanently settled until the early 19th century, when New England migrants cleared old-growth pine and hardwood forest for farms, and some stacked stump fence rows still survive from that era. Farming dominated the area until Pennsylvania bought it in 1969. Stephen Foster Lake, a 75-acre man-made lake formed by damming Mill Creek in 1977, became the park’s centerpiece, and the park opened in 1979. Today its lake, fields, and woods reflect both its agricultural past and later conservation and recreation use.
