Cannelton was settled in 1795 and took its name from the cannel coal found there. A mine opened in 1838, and it was the homestead of Ira Mansfield, a mine owner, author, and state senator. For many years it produced shale oil, and in 1850 the Harmony Society built a railroad to ship coal and oil to distant markets.
