Rock Creek Roadless Area is a protected, largely undeveloped tract in Wyoming’s Bighorn National Forest northwest of Buffalo, encompassing about 34,000 acres of forested slopes, canyons, rock formations, mountain parks, and alpine peaks. Several streams rise there, and its dense lodgepole pine forests and varied terrain support wildlife including elk, moose, mountain lion, grouse, and raptors. Its roadless character reflects both conservation policy and the difficulty of development. Although removed from wilderness consideration under the 1984 Wyoming Wilderness Act because of perceived water storage and energy potential, later assessments found very low resource potential, and the area has remained central to debate over future national forest land management.
