Controversy has long surrounded the Wagon Box Fight, especially the exact location of the Wagon Box Corral, as well as Indian casualties and the battle's length. In the early 1900’s, area residents brought survivors of the fight, both Indian and white, to the area to try to pinpoint the corral's location, but because the survivors were not there at the same time and did not agree, the dispute remained unresolved. One proposed site is a laid out location near here, while another is marked by a brass marker several hundred yards to the southeast. Efforts to resolve the debate have included correspondence with early residents, aerial photography, and archaeological surveys, and the strongest evidence comes from archaeology conducted over several years, which indicates that the laid out corral may be close to correct. Yet because the actual participants could not agree, the most accurate description places the corral somewhere atop the plateau between Big and Little Piney Creeks. Other disputed points are Indian casualties, probably between six and sixty, and the battle's duration, from 8:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.; research continues and new facts may still emerge.
