Built in 1883, Comstock Covered Bridge illustrates the Town lattice truss, one of the most significant American timber truss types of the 19th century. Patented in 1820 by architect Ithiel Town, this truss system consists of a rectangular timber frame connected by sawn planks arranged in a lattice and fastened with trunnels, or wooden pegs. The single-span bridge crosses the Trout River and has side portals that provide daylight and glimpses of the plank lattice truss system. It is one of the best surviving examples of the work of Savanard and Sheldon Jewett, lumbermen and farmers who built several covered bridges in Montgomery. After flooding affected the bridge, it was restored in 2003.
