Lower White River Wilderness
Nature
Lower White River Wilderness is a protected area in Oregon on the south side of Mount Hood that preserves the lower stretch of the White River below its glacier-fed upper reaches in White River Canyon. Established by Congress in 2009 as a National Wilderness preserve, it extends wilderness protection from the mountain’s headwaters into a lower-elevation river corridor. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service jointly manage the area. Keeps Mill Campground offers primitive trails, camping areas, and staging areas, and the wilderness supports camping, fishing, hiking, backpacking, and wildlife viewing.
