Lookout Mountain rises 6,536 feet in Hood River County, Oregon, in the northeastern Mount Hood National Forest. It is the forest’s second-highest peak and the highest point in the Badger Creek Wilderness, east-southeast of Mount Hood across the East Fork Hood River valley. Its summit is prized for sweeping volcanic panoramas that, in clear weather, include Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens, Mount Rainier, Mount Adams, Broken Top, the South and North Sister, Mount Washington, and Mount Jefferson. The mountain also figured in the Forest Service’s early fire lookout system, with a summit lookout built in 1911, replaced in 1940, and abandoned in 1966 before its removal.
