Couchsachraga Peak is a remote, pathless, fully forested summit in the Santanoni Range of New York’s Adirondacks, in Essex County beside Panther Peak. Its name, drawn from an Algonquin or Huron term meaning “dismal wilderness,” suits its isolated character and lack of views. Even so, it has long remained one of the Adirondack Forty-Six High Peaks. An 1897 survey placed it above 4,000 feet, earning its place on the list, and although a 1953 USGS remeasurement found it and three others below that mark, the traditional roster stayed unchanged. Its slopes drain into the Cold River watershed, ultimately reaching the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
