Seward Mountain, in the Seward Range of northern New York, rises 4,361 feet in the town of Harrietstown and is the 24th-highest Adirondack High Peak, making it a favored objective for hikers pursuing the Forty-Sixers. Earlier known by the Mohawk name Ou-kor-lah, or “Great Eye,” it was later named for Governor William Seward, with Mount Seward appearing in print by 1841 in a report by state geologist Ebenezer Emmons. Its first recorded ascent came on October 15, 1870, by surveyor Verplanck Colvin with guides Alvah Dunning and Mitchell Sabattis. Reached by unmarked trails, it remains valued for its remoteness and classic backcountry setting.
