In 1860, the county was named for Daniel Webster, 1782-1852, defender of the Constitution. Born in New Hampshire, he served eight years in the United States House of Representatives and nineteen years in the U.S. Senate. He was a skilled legislator, persuasive debater, eloquent orator, and constitutional lawyer. He served five years as Secretary of State under Presidents Harrison, Tyler, and Fillmore, and was buried at Marshfield, Mass.
