Founded in 1810 by Fr. Charles Nerinckx, a Catholic missionary from Belgium, St. Romuald Church is the oldest parish remaining at one location in the Diocese of Owensboro. Zachariah Mattingly donated the original 3 acres of land. The first log church was built in 1810; a second church was built in 1841 after the congregation outgrew the first; and the third and present church was built between 1897 and 1900.
