Hillsdale was platted in 1872, and railroads were instrumental in the town's development. Businesses were located near the depot at the base of the hill, while residential areas were built on the side and top of the hill. In 1903, John H. Self constructed concrete steps to facilitate access to different parts of the town. These "stone" steps provide a scenic connection with the community's past.
