The James N. and Mary F. Stavros Reservation in Essex, Massachusetts, is a 74-acre nature reserve that has been protected and managed by The Trustees of Reservations since 1986. Much of it consists of salt marsh, including about 50 acres of tidal wetlands. A notable feature is White's Hill, sold to the Trustees by Mrs. Stavros in 1988 at well below market value. The hill offers sweeping views of the Massachusetts coast, including Crane Beach, and its summit is crowned by a 50-foot tower built by Lamont G. Burnham in the 1880s. Nearby land, including the Stavros family's Cape Ann Golf Course, is also largely protected by conservation easements.
