Mount Cleveland is the highest mountain in Glacier National Park and the highest point of the Lewis Range in northern Montana, rising dramatically above one of the park’s most rugged northern landscapes near Waterton Lake and the United States–Canada border. Named for President Grover Cleveland, it is especially notable for its exceptional relief and prominence, rare in the contiguous United States. Its sedimentary rock records the larger geologic history of Glacier National Park, including uplift by the Lewis Overthrust. First climbed in 1920 by Frank B. Wynn, it later figured in notable climbs and in a 1969 avalanche that killed five Montana climbers.
