The James Ross home site was established in 1857 after Ross, originally from Scotland, purchased 8,877 acres for a ranch and estate. He played an important role in the economic and social development of Marin and provided agricultural, dairy, and lumber resources for San Francisco’s growth. The house has been rebuilt and enlarged on the same location, and the Town of Ross was named in his honor.
