The last known encounter between Indians and the U.S. Army in Oklahoma occurred here on September 13-14, 1878, when Northern Cheyenne led by Dull Knife and Little Wolf fled Darlington Agency at Ft. Reno to return to the Dakotas. Crossing Woods County, they killed two cowboys employed by W.R. Colcord and fought portions of Companies G and H, 4th Cavalry, under Capt. Joseph Rendlebrock at Turkey Springs. An Arapaho scout and three soldiers were killed and three wounded, and five Indians were wounded, including one little girl.
