Three days after arriving in the Salt Lake Valley in 1847, Perrigrine Sessions was sent by Brigham Young to find grazing land for church cattle. His wagon made the first tracks between the Salt Lake settlement and what later became Sessions Settlement. For a time he and his family lived in their covered wagon, but before winter they carved a dugout in an embankment and spent their first winter there, which fortunately was mild. The next spring a small log cabin was built near the dugout, the first of many homes Perrigrine Sessions built for his growing family. The dugout was Bountiful's first pioneer home.
