The Schuster home was built in 1917 on land George Schuster had purchased in 1915 as part of the Freeport town site. It was built primarily by his sons Manuel, Henry, and Joe, all experienced carpenters. The two-story house stood on heavy cedar tree blocks, featured large tapered columns and a wraparound pine floor porch, and had two enclosed chimneys along the ridge that provided heat before natural gas became available in the city. Its walls were covered with milled cypress wood, making it one of Freeport’s first and most well-constructed wooden structures. After George and his wife died, Joe and his wife Valentine, who had lived in a small house in the backyard, purchased the family home from the Schuster estate in 1951. Valentine remained there after Joe’s death until 1981, and after her death her children continued to maintain the house in its original state. Much of the original furniture is still used, some of it more than 100 years old. In 2003, Schuster descendants established the Schuster house corporation and placed the home in the care of the Brazos historical society, which carried out a 10-year restoration. With donations, membership dues, and community help, the house was fully restored to its original state and opened to the public as a museum, remaining tangible evidence of one of the earliest homes in Freeport still in existence.
