Mount Holyoke College Botanic Garden in South Hadley, Massachusetts spans the campus with an arboretum, outdoor gardens, and the Talcott Greenhouse, combining landscape design with botanical study. Formally designated in 1878 under the guidance of botany professor Lydia Shattuck, it has long served as an outdoor teaching laboratory and research resource. The present greenhouse complex was built from 1896 to 1899 after an earlier one burned, and it houses non-hardy plants while supporting instruction and campus traditions. Its specialized gardens, permanent collections, and the annual spring Flower Show, held since 1971, make it an enduring center of teaching, research, and college life.
