Sacred Mountain
History
Sacred Mountain, a small mountain in central Arizona near Lake Montezuma, is significant for the archaeological remains on and around it rather than its height. Research in the surrounding basin found evidence of intensive farming, including check dams, raised-bed gardening, extensive canals, and cultivated agaves on the mountain, showing it was part of a broader agricultural landscape. The site also contains a large pueblo of about 50 to 60 rooms arranged in three blocks and a heavily eroded Hohokam ball court identified as the last constructed in the Verde Valley. These remains make it important for understanding past regional settlement and farming.
