Site of Mass Grave
History
9
The forest fires of October 12, 1918 devastated the area and 453 people perished. Because of the threat of infection, burials needed to be done quickly. Two hundred bodies, of which 45 were not identified, were placed in a mass grave at this site. Numbered ceramic medallions were assigned to each body, with some still visible today. MLAHS has a list of the people with their assigned numbers.
