Washington Irving Memorial Park and Arboretum in Bixby, Oklahoma, is a public park and botanical garden rooted in Washington Irving’s October 1832 visit during a federal expedition through what was then Indian Territory. Traveling with Judge Henry L. Ellsworth, Charles La Trobe, and Albert de Pourtalès, Irving joined a 31-day, 350-mile tour from Fort Gibson through central Oklahoma. He hunted, traded with Osage people, and met Sam Houston, experiences he later used in Tour of the Prairies, published in 1835. Today the site blends literary memory with recreation through trails, gardens, memorials, and an Irving statue inspired by his home, Sunnyside.
