Peterstown was founded by Christian Peters, who settled two miles east in 1784, and it was established as a town in 1804. Peters served as an expert rifleman in the Revolutionary War. In the 1830s, the Giles, Fayette and Kanawha Turnpike, a notable north-south route, linked the town.
