Seattle Chinese Garden in West Seattle occupies 4.6 acres on a hilltop at South Seattle College, with sweeping views of downtown Seattle, Elliott Bay, and the Cascade Mountains. Conceived through the sister-city partnership between Seattle and Chongqing, it was designed as the first authentic Sichuan-style garden in the United States. Since opening in phases beginning in the early 1990s, it has combined traditional halls, pavilions, horticulture, and rockwork inspired by Sichuan and the Yangtze gorges. Built with contributions from architects, artisans, and craftspeople in China and Seattle, it expresses cultural exchange while advancing plans to become one of the largest Chinese gardens outside China.
