East Pocket Knob is a 7,196-foot mountain in northern Arizona and the highest point in the Red Rock-Secret Mountain Wilderness, rising sharply above Oak Creek Canyon within the Verde River watershed. Its dark basalt cap over lighter Coconino Sandstone gives it the layered look typical of the region’s red-rock landscape. The mountain’s name preserves pioneer terminology for an isolated tract enclosed by cliffs. It is also known for the steep A. B. Young Trail, first built in the 1880s for access to grazing land and rebuilt in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. A wooden fire lookout built in 1943 still stands on the summit.
