Buffalo Bill State Park in northwestern Wyoming surrounds the reservoir formed by Buffalo Bill Dam on the Shoshone River in Shoshone Canyon near Cody. Named for William F. Cody, who settled in the area in the 1870s, guided hunters there, promoted irrigation and agriculture, and founded Cody, the park reflects both his regional influence and the transformation of the landscape by reclamation works. The dam, begun in 1905 and completed in 1910 as the Shoshone Dam, was then the world’s tallest concrete arch dam. The park, established in 1957, later changed substantially when the dam was raised, expanding the reservoir and requiring park facilities to be rebuilt.
