Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee, founded in 1967, became known as the first cageless zoo in the United States, offering a drive-through preserve designed to feel more like an African safari than a conventional zoo. Spread across more than 600 acres, it features over 1,000 animals in seven sections, with visitors passing slowly through habitats where many species roam freely. The park also includes Safari World, a family attraction area, and has been noted for its chimpanzee island system, primate research interest, and role as a retirement home for former laboratory and entertainment chimpanzees, including the long-lived Little Mama.
