Lewis Richards, born in Virginia in 1754, served as a sergeant with Gen. George R. Clark when he built the first blockhouse at the site of present Cincinnati. In 1779 he went on an attempt to save Kentuckians captured by English and Indians, and when he was unable to overtake them, he destroyed the Indian villages at Chillicothe and Piqua. Richards was a volunteer at the battle of Blue Licks in 1782 and died here in 1846.
