Cherney Maribel Caves County Park near Maribel, Wisconsin, spans seventy-five acres along the West Twin River and is known for eleven caves in a bluff on the Niagara Escarpment. Formed mainly by solution before the last ice age and later enlarged by glacial meltwater, the caves include Manitowoc County’s largest, Maribel New Hope Cave. First discovered on private land around 1892, the site became a tourist destination after Charles Steinbrecher built the Maribel Caves Hotel in 1900. Adolph Cherney sold the cave property to Manitowoc County in 1963, creating the county’s first park. Today it combines recreation, cave protection, exploration, and notable plant life.
