Pole Creek Wilderness is a protected backcountry area in southwestern Idaho’s Owyhee Desert, where high rhyolite and basalt plateaus are cut by rugged canyons more than 800 feet deep. Known for whitewater rapids on Pole Creek and an undeveloped character without designated trails, it contains one of the western United States’ largest concentrations of sheer-walled volcanic canyons. Created by the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 as part of a wider expansion of protected land in Idaho’s Owyhee region, it also provides habitat for mule deer, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, sage grouse, raptors, songbirds, and rare plants, and remains valued for remote recreation and scenic protection.
