Religion, morality, and knowledge were held to be necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, and schools and the means of education were to be forever encouraged under Article III of the Ordinance of the Northwest Territory, established by the Continental Congress on July 13, 1787, in the territory in which Edgerton is situated.
