Bridger Wilderness is a protected backcountry area in Wyoming’s Wind River Range, within Bridger-Teton National Forest and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. First set aside in 1931 as a primitive area, it became wilderness under the Wilderness Act in 1964 and was expanded in 1984. Named for explorer Jim Bridger, it includes Gannett Peak, Wyoming’s highest mountain, extensive trails, major climbing access, and some of the forest’s largest glaciers. Managed to remain undeveloped, it bars roads, buildings, logging, mining, and motorized or mechanized travel. Its elevations support varied forests, fragile alpine plants, abundant wildlife, and severe mountain conditions.
