Gold Brook Covered Bridge in Stowe, Vermont, built about 1844 by John W. Smith, is a rare and well-preserved covered bridge carrying Covered Bridge Road over Gold Brook. It is Vermont’s only surviving wooden Howe truss bridge on a public roadway from the 19th century and the only 19th-century covered bridge still standing in Stowe. Also known as Stowe Hollow Bridge, it later became widely known as Emily’s Bridge through local ghost lore about a young woman said to have died there in the 1850s. Its rarity and preservation earned it listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
