Bald Rock Dome is a granite summit in Plumas National Forest in northern California near Lake Oroville, rising above the woods with sweeping views across the Sacramento Valley to the distant Coast Ranges. Long before it became a recreation destination, it lay within the Maidu homeland, and metates and grinding holes on the rock preserve evidence of food preparation there. A short forest trail reaches the dome, where crevasses and unusual formations break up the granite surface. The area supports hiking, climbing, rappelling, and camping under waterway setbacks, and it also contains a small stacked-rock shelter ruin and wildlife including deer, snakes, black bear, and mountain lion.
