Copper Country State Forest spans parts of Baraga and Dickinson counties in Michigan’s west-central Upper Peninsula and is managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. It consists largely of lands heavily logged after old-growth timber was cut in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After Michigan acquired these tracts, the state managed them for reforestation, and much of the resulting second-growth forest came to include pulpwood species such as aspen and birch. The forest also supports camping, fishing, and hunting, reflecting the region’s strong whitetail deer hunting culture alongside its timber history.
