History
The Historical Society of Windham County in Newfane, Vermont, was founded in 1927 by Clara Chipman Newton and incorporated in 1933 to record, study, and preserve the county’s history. It operates as a nonprofit organization and as the home of the Windham County Museum, whose building was begun in 1936 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Through the museum, public programs, and the biannual Windham County History Fair, it makes local history accessible. In 2015, it broadened that mission by purchasing Newfane station to preserve the history of the West River Railroad and develop a railroad museum.
