Confederate soldiers from Missouri and Texas who died at this post during the Civil War are remembered here as men who were true to their native soil, gave their lives to a lost cause, and died far from home and kindred. Their memory was upheld by survivors and by the citizens of Washington, who placed this memorial in 1888 at the center of 74 graves and later restored it in 1911, around 1938, 1994, and 1997 after damage from a tree in 1996.
