Sacatar Trail Wilderness, created in 1994 by the California Desert Protection Act, is a 51,900-acre federally designated wilderness in California on the southern edge of the Sierra Nevada. About 20 miles northwest of Ridgecrest, it protects a dramatic transition zone where desert and Sierra plant communities meet, from Rose Valley bajadas to a granite crest reaching 8,800 feet. Steep canyons, perennial springs, and riparian growth add to its ecological variety. Named for the historic Sacatar Trail, once the only western route into Owens Valley, it remains valued for hiking, backpacking, pinyon nut gathering, and protection of its wilderness character.
