Approximately 200 yards southwest stands an old family graveyard where many distinguished Georgians are buried. Captain James Harrison, one of the earlier settlers of this area, rests there; his home, begun in 1837, was the first frame house in the area and was built near the cemetery. Also buried there is Lieutenant Colonel Theodore LeGrande Guerry, C.S.A., president of the Georgia Senate from 1858 to 1860 and author of the bill creating Quitman County. Guerry organized and served as first captain of the Quitman Grays, later Company I, 11th Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment; he later rose to lieutenant colonel and served as executive officer of the 11th. The cemetery also holds Second Lieutenant John Benjamin Guerry, C.S.A., of Company I, 11th Georgia Infantry, who was killed at the Battle of Second Manassas, Virginia, in August 1862, and Lieutenant James B. Harrison, C.S.A., of Company F, 61st Georgia Infantry, killed fighting valiantly at the Battle of the Wilderness, Virginia, in 1864. Captain Edward B. Brannon, C.S.A., who commanded Company I after the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1863, when its commander Captain F. M. Bledsoe was captured, was originally buried there but was later moved to the cemetery at Georgetown Baptist Church. Also buried there are Colonel William Red Harrison, C.S.A., who organized and led the 6th Louisiana Cavalry Regiment, and Major William Lewis Crawford, first pastor of Georgetown Baptist Church.
