In the late 1850’s, under the leadership of Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, Military Road was constructed between Fort Vancouver and Fort Bellingham, continuing north of Seattle and skirting the swamps of the Sammamish Slough. The portion through Kenmore, Bothell, and Woodinville eventually extended north along the future Highway 9 to Fort Bellingham. Junior officers at the time of construction included George Pickett, George McClellan, Joseph Hook, and Ulysses S. Grant. Local engineer Capt. W.W. Delacy, with Native Americans and settlers, surveyed the land between Seattle and Fort Bellingham. From 1912 to 1915, Greek and Italian immigrants laid red bricks over the old Military Road from Seattle to Bothell to facilitate travel for settlers, military, and commerce.
