Asbestos Mountain is a summit in Riverside County, California, named for the mining activity once developed at its base among some of California's early asbestos workings. Those mines were initially valued for producing asbestos, but their significance changed as the material's toxic health effects became understood. After asbestos use was phased out, the mines at the foot of the mountain were buried. The summit remains primarily a geographic feature linked to a significant and cautionary part of the region's industrial history.
