Nesmith Point is a 3,848-foot mountain on the edge of Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge and the highest point along the Gorge’s rim. In a remote section of the Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness within Mount Hood National Forest near the Bull Run Watershed boundary, it is part of the Boring Lava Field and formed about one million years ago. Its striking profile above the Gorge was shaped much later when the Missoula Floods sheared away its north face. A fire lookout once stood on the summit. Because road access lies only through the closed Bull Run Watershed Management Area, the mountain is reached legally by trail, chiefly via Nesmith Point Trail #428.
