Zigzag Mountain is a volcanic peak on the west side of the Mount Hood area in Oregon, close enough to Mount Hood that it is often treated as part of that larger mountain’s foothills rather than a separate major summit. Its highest point rises above 5,007 feet, and its second summit, East Zigzag, reaches 4,973 feet. Capped by Pliocene andesite and basalt, it reflects the region’s volcanic history. Its name appears to come from Oregon pioneer Joel Palmer’s account of the zigzagging route he followed while descending from Mount Hood’s Zigzag Canyon and crossing the mountain. East Zigzag once held a United States Forest Service fire lookout that was destroyed before 1970.
