Madera Peak is a 10,509-foot summit in California’s Sierra Nevada, within the Ansel Adams Wilderness on Sierra National Forest land. Part of an ancient ridge linked to the formation of the Clark Range, it is the southernmost summit of that ridge and rises sharply above nearby terrain, including 1,600 feet above Lady Lake in just 0.38 miles. Its slopes drain into tributaries of the San Joaquin River, and its alpine climate is shaped by Pacific storms bringing rain and snow. Originally called Black Peak, it received its present name in 1932 to preserve the name of Madera County, derived from the Spanish word for wood.
