Jarbidge Peak rises in the Jarbidge Mountains of northern Nevada within the Jarbidge Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. It is the range’s second-highest summit, and the boundary of the Jarbidge Wilderness crosses the peak. Its name comes from the Shoshone language and is said to mean “devil.” Local tradition holds that Indigenous people believed these hills were haunted, a belief that has long contributed to the mountain’s stark identity. Today, the peak remains part of a remote high-country landscape defined both by its geography and by its place within protected wilderness.
