During the Korean War, Vance County, North Carolina, lost ten servicemen who gave their lives in defense of freedom: Charles M. Gentile, Uncas B. Hardin, Ivan F. Hefner, Charles E. Ivey, Fred O. Jordan, William C. Johnson, Russell Y. Mitchell, Earl C. Saltz, James E. Ward, and Samuel K. Watkins, all serving in the Army between 1950 and 1953.
