The Hundred-Mile Wilderness is a central Maine section of the Appalachian Trail between Monson and Abol Bridge on the West Branch of the Penobscot River, just south of Baxter State Park. It is widely known as the trail’s most remote and one of its most challenging stretches, long associated with the need for hikers to be fully self-sufficient. Although logging roads cross the route and the protected trail corridor is bordered by extensive public and private forestland, it remains a defining backcountry passage. Since 2000, limited re-supply and lodging opportunities have eased part of the journey, while surrounding conservation efforts have helped preserve its wilderness character.
