Elephant Mountain
Military
Elephant Mountain rises in Maine’s North Woods in Piscataquis County, near Moosehead Lake, Baker Mountain, and White Cap Mountain. It sits within the Piscataquis River watershed, with its slopes draining through North Brook, South Brook, and Baker Brook into a network of ponds, streams, and rivers that ultimately reach Penobscot Bay. The mountain is most widely known as the site of a United States Air Force B-52 crash on January 24, 1963. Wreckage from the crash remains on the mountain, and a hiking trail leads to the site, where a memorial has made the mountain both a natural landmark and a place of remembrance.
